The Journey Begins!!!
And so my journey now begins. As a newcomer to the school, I feel all alone. A scared stranger. For others who would wish to follow the 'presumptous' step I made, here are some vocabularies you must know to mask the seemingly ignorant you and to fit into the 'university culture' of one of the best universities in the world.
DATE: This is an almost four-hour mental torture assessing your aptitude as to whether you are prepared to take the graduate school or not. Doctor's Admission Test in Education (DATE) is a measure of your reasoning, verbal and numerical abilities. The other part of the test is an essay test. The content is not much a big matter but the writing style is. (I think it's this part that I did well.) The rest of the test was indeed a mental torture. This is administered once a year.
ORIENTATION: Impression setting (not impressed, tho). There was the OHP and the white screen but they were never used. Sound system was a karaoke in a theater of about 200 students (lols). And then the emcee would comment: 'Soon we'll have a video conference here with other professors abroad'. I hope so. The tips on how to succeed in the graduate school were discussed. A manual was provided individually. Start meeting new friends. I did have from the Mathematics Education: Alex and Joel. Alex is a grade 6 math teacher here in the city while Joel works at Makati Municipal Hall, Planning Department.
MEDICAL EXAM: You will have an X-ray examination of your chest, dental and visual exams. It was during this procedure that a mass was discovered in my lungs causing me to defer my admission last sem.
A WALK TO REMEMBER: Walk and walk. Burn calories. This is what I hated most. The sweatspiring tiresome walk towards the Office of Admissions may be good but it stinks.
TRIAGE: A section in the health service where you show your green form. The nurse on duty will refer you to the available doctor.
CRS: A small two-storey buiding along Magsaysay St. where you get your webmail account needed for pre-enlistment. I don't actually know to what words do they stand.
DEFERMENT: A letter-driven (almost everything is) request if you cannot continue your study because of some reasons.
These are some of the vocabularies I met during my first two days here. I bet there are still more to come.
